Project

Pigment painting on reused antique teak wood panels from Chor Bazaar Mumbai. The paintings explore and reinterpretate techniques and materials from historical paintings on wood.
The concept and approach to painting on antique wood in my work is part of an ongoing investigation of how the materials historical context influence of.

The title ICON refers to the Greek eikonas, as well as the Egyptian and Byzantine icons, wood panel paintings, which from the 6th to the late 13th century represented the world view of the time with what we today could call flat surface painting. These paintings on wood panels were among the earliest examples of painting which could be moved around independently of the architecture.
