The design is inspired by the surroundings – the art and architecture of Roskilde Cathedral.
Here, the many historical layers emerge and intertwine, together forming various narratives and interpretations of Christianity, the church's usage throughout history, and offering glimpses into parts of Denmark's history.
As one moves through the church, it feels as though space and art are constantly experienced through or alongside something else, like layers upon layers. Different elements, stories, representations, styles, or periods are juxtaposed, influencing one another and creating a complex and overwhelming impression.
The new chasuble is a continuation of Roskilde Cathedral’s many layers and historical epochs, captured in glimpses and reinterpreted in this textile liturgical garment.
The form reinterprets the design of historical chasubles, which are open and lightweight, allowing the priest freedom of movement in both arms and walking. The wide box pleats and folds reflect the church’s textile representations and its folded architecture.
The chasuble is made in a dark green satin-woven wool. The dark green color conveys calmness and gravity, providing a framework for the drama of the colorful inner silk textiles, visible in the lining and the tall pleats that open at the back when in motion.
On the front, a golden cross is appliquéd. The lining’s mosaic-like color composition and the gold embroidery on the back emphasize visibility and allow the priest to stand out – even from a distance.
The embroidery motif "God the Son – Jesus on the cross and the Tree of Life" is traced from a fresco from 1300 located on the choir screen wall. The simple lines and minimalist expression may evoke associations with comic art and graffiti.
