Project

The colour concept and pigment paint on the ceilings of Avasara Academy originates from local traditional pigments, used throughout India.

Avasara Academy, a four-story school for economically disadvantaged young women and girls in western India. The building is composed of a simple concrete structure with double-height ceilings and bamboo exterior coverings. The custom-made colors were designed and developed by Malene Bach.

Using colour as material, the project sets out to connect the architecture with the surrounding landscape, the cultural origins of the students and the regional historical use of colour.
Organic pigments, white cement and binder on ceilings, paint on rooftop water tanks and solar chimneys, pigments and linseed oil on reused teakwood doors, furniture decoration.

The project was presented at the Biennale di Architettura di Venezia 2018 as part of freespace at Arsenale
